There are many online art-journaling programs around, but the first and most popular of these is the 21 Secrets art-journal program hosted by Connie Hozvicka from Dirty Footprints Studio.
This year 21 Secrets is turning 5 and to celebrate, Connie put together a host of amazing instructors for weekly live 90 min classes. Basically, participants sign in weekly, for a live 90 min interactive web-cast where they create along with Connie and the instructor. They ask questions, discuss, and play along with what is being taught. It's brilliant idea and has been unbelievably popular and wildly successful.
I have been anxiously awaiting my turn to present my broadcast and that day is today. I'd like to think that Connie has saved the best for last, but the quality of the instructors and their workshops has been incredible, so the best has been coming all year long.
It's taken some time for me to get set up, my studio supplies arrived from Australia only a week ago, but it's been amazing sorting through it all and setting up all my equipment. But now I'm set-up and ready to go.
I'm probably better known for my illustrative style of art-journaling and I get lots of request to teach more about my simple illustration techniques for art-journaling, especially my florals. So, for this live class I'll be showing participants how to sketch simple flower designs using a technique that can be applied to almost any subject.
Illustrating your art-journals with images and icons from your own world can help you become a better artist, plus your journals become more meaningful and deeply personal.
In this live class, I'll be using my treasured Twinkling h2O's as well as regular watercolors. Don't worry if you don't have Twinks, regular watercolors will do just fine.
I'll also be using watercolor pencils and water soluble marker such as the Tombow Dual Brush Pen. If you don't have either of these, then no big deal, regular marker and regular color pencil or crayon will also work fine.
Many people make their own art journals, but my favorite is the Stillman & Birn "Zeta" Sketchbook. It has super heavyweight (180lb) smooth white paper and takes many layers of wet and mixed media beautifully. Many of the participants journal on loose sheets of watercolor paper, but they are encouraged to use whatever they prefer, just make sure the paper is heavy enough to take wet washes and mixed media. I recommend a minimum of 140lb.
Sadly, the 21 Secrets LIVE program is long ago sold-out and coming to an end with only a couple of classes left to go. But I'll be presenting a new class as part of the 21 Secrets FALL program called "Splash & Scribble" which will cover some of my techniques for illustrative art journaling as well.
If you are already a participant of 21 Secrets LIVE, then don't forget to tune at 5pm Central Time (USA) for a great fun, creative art journaling lesson with me. And if you're not a participant of 21 Secrets LIVE, but would like to join me for "Splash & Scribble" as par of 21 Secrets FALL, then click here for more information about that program.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you online LIVE tonight at 5pm (CDST). xx
