On my recent trip to Australia I was enjoying a late January day in my sister's garden and I noticed a pot with this single, beautiful, yellow hibiscus. It was small and lovely, so I quickly sketched it.
I usually have several sketchbooks on the go at any one time, and this particular sketchbook is my illustrated journal. It's the place I like to write about my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I always try to illustrate each page with something that represents my day or state of mind.
When I look at this page a flood of memories come back to me. I was only a couple of days from returning to the US, I was missing my husband who had returned ahead of us, I was dreading the cold snowy winter, and I was apprehensive and very tense about traveling alone with my children.
Everything worked out of course, and now I can see that the warmth and beauty of this little hibiscus gave me a great sense of comfort and optimism during this time. I know this because these are the feelings I have when I look at this page.
Illustrated journals can be very very powerful. Words are one thing, but the addition of pictures, however rough or rudimentary, can invoke so much more. These journals are generally for my eyes only, but sometimes I like to share.
Do you keep a journal? Is it something you illustrate?
Thanks for checking in and don't forget to join me tomorrow for Friday Sketches. xx
