Friday Sketches - Street View & Giveaway

Friday sketches is a weekly blog event where you can share what you've been doing in your sketchbook. It offers a simple weekly theme that you may or may not choose to use.

Friday Sketches enables you to practice your sketching while capturing the beauty and simplicity of the world around you.  There are no rules except that your work must be in a sketchbook or artists journal.  You can use any mediums, any techniques, and sketch any subjects you like.

To join in, simply click the link at the end of this post to share your sketchbook pages. You can link up anytime during the coming week, and be sure to check out what others have been doing by clicking through the links.

You can grab your "Friday Sketches" blog button here.

Have fun xx

The end of another week and I am thrilled to present Friday Sketches once again.

The March theme for The Sketchbook Challenge is "Warm/Cool" and it inspired me to think about how the colors we use in our sketchbooks effect the composition.  So I was playing around with simple "Seasons", trying to capture the mood of a scene with either warm or cool colors.

So my Friday Sketch for this week was done from my front window looking out onto the street and driveway. It has been a very snowy and cold winter here in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and I'm yet to see what my front yard really looks like given I've only been back here for a month.

It does have this beautiful old lamp post standing about half way up my drive way.  I think it's an ornamental lamp because it doesn't seem to work now and there is no socket for a bulb. It doesn't matter, it looks lovely and it will hold a big candle on a hot summers night.

I sketched this directly in ink then washed a little watercolor over it for substance and form.  It was a very quick sketch and not particularly good, but it was the process of painting from reality that was fun.  Changing light makes snow contours hard, but what great practice.

Also, my friends Karen & Zandra from Little Yellow Couch are blogging under the theme "Bookish" all this month, and are talking about all thing books.  From what they love to read to resources for readers, they are also featuring artists that have made things book related.

As part of this Bookish Blog Party they are having a giveaway.  Jacob Deatherage from Ex Libris Anonymous creates beautiful handmade journals from used books and has generously given them four of his one-of-a-kind journals to give away!

To be in the running for one of these beautiful books, click through the link below and scroll down.  Don't forget to tell them you came from "Friday Sketches" on Dion Dior's Blog".
