Words To Live By

Green Bottle

"Eyes, what are they? Colored glass where reflections come and pass.
Open windows--by them sit beauty, learning, love and wit."

~ Mary Elizabeth Coleridge

Green Bottle

I love this poem, but am in danger of misinterpreting its meaning.

Green Bottle

To me it seems to address the issue of our obsessions with how others perceive us.

Green Bottle

Like our distorted image in the reflection in a colored bottle, it is not us, it is not our truth rather an image of influenced by elements unique to the observer and beyond our control.

Green Bottle

Look inside and clearly see your true beauty, you are unique and wonderful just as you are.

Holiday Colors

Red Tulips

This month I am thrilled to be hosting the monthly theme for The Sketchbook Challenge.

Red Tulips

My choice for this month is "Holiday Colors".  I love this time of the year, with all the glitter, sparkle and shimmer of the season.  It is a feast for the eyes and creative fodder for the sketchbook.

Red Tulips

Capturing the colors around us at this time of the year is glorious.  So many people around the work celebrate December in so many different ways.  But the thing that I love the most is the difference in the seasons from one hemisphere to the other.

Red Tulips

Winter is blasting its way across the Northern Hemisphere with little subtlety, and summer is settling it's warm embrace over the Southern Hermisphere.

Red Tulips

So, for The Sketchbook Challenge, I thought it would be fun for everyone to capture the colors of celebration around them.  The various icons of sacred celebrations, the images of December, the colors.

Red Tulips

I love The Sketchbook Challenge.  It is a monthly program that has been going on for several years.  It got me started to feverishly into sketchbook art and is always to inspiring.  If you're looking for a little more inspiration in your sketchbook art, then pop on over to The Sketcbhook Challenge website and check it out, there is so much there for any artist to enjoy.

Red Tulips

This page was done in my Stillman & Birn "Epsilon" Series Sketchbook, using Delta Ceramcoat Acrylics, Luminarte Twinkling h2O's, Gold Leafing, and Prismacolor Colored Pencil.  It perfectly captures the holiday colors of December for me.

Mastering Twinks Open Access - Early Bird Special

I am thrilled to announce that Mastering Twinks Part 1 - Twinkling Discoveries is now available as
OPEN ACCESS.

This hugely popular class has traditionally had limited places and has sold out very quickly with many people missing out on the opportunity to take the class.  So after three years of limited runs, Mastering Twinks Part 1 is now available as an indefinite, self-guided, full access class.

Participants get complete access to all the lessons and materials from day one and have ongoing access to the class room and all the materials indefinitely.  This means that you can take your time through the abundance of videos and PDF.

Play around with the techniques, exercises, and projects, and come and go as often as you like as you build up your skills and supplies.

Open Access means you can work at your own pace and engage with other participants, ask questions, and share your work in the privacy of the Mastering Twinks classroom.

This is a wonderful, exciting, glittering class that takes you on a gentle journey through watercolor technique using Luminarte's beautiful Twinkling h2O's luminescent watercolors.

To celebrate, throughout the month of December you can register for Mastering Twinks 1 as Open Access for the early bird rate of $65.

Please join me on this amazing, glittering journey into the art of luminescent watercolor.

Megan's Cupcake

Megan's Cupcake

Last weekend my gorgeous little girl turned 8 years old.

Megan's Cupcake

As is my tradition, I marked the occasion in my sketchbook with a cup cake especially for her.

Megan's Cupcake

We had a wonderful birthday weekend, the highlight of which was a birthday party at a Circus School with several of her school friends.

Megan's Cupcake

Her extended family were also there and it was a true delight watching her Dad twirl the hula-hoop, her Grandma spin plates on a stick, and her Aunt walk the tightrope.

Megan's Cupcake

Birthdays for 8 year old's are definitely the most fun.

Happy Birthday sweet Megan!

Australian Sketches

Australian Sketches

Australian Sketches

Over the past few months I've been sketching as much of the essence of Australia as I can.

Australian Sketches

A couple of my sketches, like the Bush Telegraph (above) and The Drover (below) were done from photo reference rather than in the flesh.

Australian Sketches

But we've been taking lots of opportunity to get out and explore this beautiful country.  Coastlines, national parks, mountain ranges, they are all here and they are beautifully unique and full of surprises.

Australian Sketches

Of particular interest to me has been the outback cottages and shacks.  Where we are on the Bellerine Peninsula, there is no shortage of glorious rural and coastal architecture to sketch.

Australian Sketches

Australia is such a gloriously colorful place and trying to portray the light and colors in my sketchbook hasn't always been easy.
