Simplicity in a Cup

Flower in Cup

Happy Friday everyone!  It's been a rather torrid week for me and I'm very glad to be facing the weekend.

Flower in Cup

My sweet baby girl turns 8 tomorrow and I'm so happy to be turning my mind to a happy celebration.

Flower in Cup

Next week is the start of December, the holiday season.  This year we will be having a hot summer Christmas, probably on a beach somewhere.

But for today I have been making time to create simple art in my journal, something that reflects my desired state.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks for checking in. xx

Frangipani Yellow

Frangipani

Do you ever stop and think about how color affects your moods?

I have a fascination with color and it's effect on our psyche.  I know that color has a profound affect on me and I'm always amazed at how at certain times in my life I am drawn to certain colors.

Frangipani

I have a lot of books on color theory and the psychology of color, and I recently came across a link on Facebook that addressed just this topic.  So I refreshed my understanding of color and decided to use it to transform my mood.

Yellow is my go-to color today.  According to PositiveMed.com..."Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness."  Just what I need right now.

Frangipani

The same can be said for light.  Sunlight is so uplifting and energizing. I know I am solar powered and when I feel drained and depleted, a good does of sunshine always does wonders.

Frangipani

The frangipani is a remarkable flower of the tropics that reflects both color and warmth.  Much of northern Australia is littered with these exquisite flowers and their perfume is intoxicating.  The frangipani holds many memories and associations for me.  Some of my happiest times living in Sydney were sprinkled with the scent of the frangipani tree, so when I need uplifting, this is my flower of choice.

Messy Poppies

Messy Poppies

Not every day do I feel calm and in control of my art.  That's the beauty of art journaling!  It is a dynamic reflection of the phases and stages we pass through in life.

Messy Poppies

Right now, I'm going through transition with lots of changes taking place in my life.  Some good, some not so good, but all necessary.

Messy Poppies

One of the hardest parts of being an artists is finding consistency and satisfaction. I often wonder if those concepts are an elusive contradiction to creativity? I admire those who can continuously, and rigorously turn out beautiful art...I can't!

Messy Poppies

Messy Poppies

I'm finding a lot of discombobulation in my life right now.  A clash of priorities and pulls on my time in all directions. It's leading me to a crisis of confidence, a state of high-anxiety, but as with everything, I must allow myself to go with the flow...even when I don't want to!

This journal page is a good reflection of my current state...messy!

I'm very excited to announce that my mini-class "Sparkle-arkle" is now open for registration.  This gorgeous little class was part of 21 Secrets 2013 and was so much fun to teach. 21 Secrets 2013 is moving into its final weeks and I'm thrilled to be able to open this class up to a wider audience in 2014.

"Sparkle-arkle" is a six part mini-workshop that is all about...well, sparkle. In this beautiful workshop you will learn how to use sparkle to enhance your art process in unique and interesting ways. You will use an array of materials from glitter, glue, and embellishments, to crystal infused paints, pigments, and layering. "Sparkle-arkle" is all about dazzling, shimmering, sparkling art and self-expression.  But most of all, it is about having FUN!!

"Sparkle-arkle" is offered as an open access mini-class, which means once you sign up, you get full access to all the materials and the classroom indefinitely, so you can take your time and work at your own pace.

"Wisdom Circles" is a beautiful 3-Part mini e-workshop that uses ancient Arthurian legend to infuse the art of creating mandalas. In this class we use a variety of art materials to create beautiful, meaningful, and deeply personal circles of wisdom.

Each part builds upon the previous, introducing you to some simple mandala and mixed media art techniques.  It is a small, self-guided, program that includes some videos and PDF download's.

Click here for more information on "Wisdom Circles".

These beautiful fun-filled mini-classes are $35 each, however, if you purchase the Mini-Class Combo you get full and ongoing access to both of these classes in the same classroom for only $60. This combo offer is open for registration now and the classes goes live on January 1st, 2014.

To celebrate these new mini-class offerings I'm giving away 2 places on "Wisdom Circles", 2 places on "Sparkle-arkle" and 2 places on the "Mini-Class Combo".   4 lucky winners will receive either "Sparkle-arkle" or "Wisdom Circles", and 2 lucky winners will receive the Mini-Class Combo which includes both classes.  All classes are open-access which means you gain indefinite access to all the materials and downloads.

To be in the draw, please leave me a comment telling me which of these classes you'd like to win and why.  For more chances to win, feel free to blog, tweet, Facebook, or Google this giveaway, then come back and leave me another comment with your link.  I will draw 6 winners at the end of the month.

Simplicity

Two Gerberas

My watercolor sketchbook has so many purposes and lately I've been exploring a style closer to realism.

Two Gerberas

I've always enjoyed and appreciated realistic painting, but it has never really moved me. But trying to capture what nature has presented exactly as she has presented it has been an amazing learning experience for me, and to be honest, I'm finding it a wonderful process.

Two Gerberas

I'm using this exercise as a way to focus on values in watercolor.  Using the same color to create different depths of color that help present a sense of depth.  It's a lot harder than it looks, but is very personally satisfying.

Find the Calm

A Bowl Of Flowers

Firstly, I'm sorry I have had an unexpected blog break over the past couple of weeks.  My life has been unexpected crazy with family issues dominating.

A Bowl Of Flowers

I have even had difficulty getting to my sketchbook lately, which is like being without food and water for me.

A Bowl Of Flowers

But sometimes a little break can be invigorating and as I come back to my center, I find a new found energy.

A Bowl Of Flowers

With so much going on in my life right now, finding the calm is vitally important to my balance and well being.  It is often difficult to find a quiet moment to meditate, sketch, read, or even listen to music, but that's the way life goes.  Up's and Down's, Chaos and Calm!

A Bowl Of Flowers

To navigate times like this I just let myself go with the flow and do what needs to be done.  The rest can wait.
