Spring Blossoms

Spring Blossoms

Spring has arrived in Australia in all its glory.

Spring Blossoms

The thing I love most about spring is the blossom trees.  I love how they bloom is such abundance, then shed their petals to lay a carpet of color on the ground.

A Single Tulip

Single Tulip

Here is a single tulip, painted in my sketchbook.

Single Tulip

Sometimes, in the early hours of the morning I like to paint from photographs.  I scour magazines and the internet for images that inspire, and I paint them.

Single Tulip

I love working in water soluble mediums.  Pastel, pencil, paint, the ability to lay down color dry and then manipulate with a brush is so appealing to me.

Single Tulip

I manage a group on Facebook called "Water Soluble Art", it's wonderful to see what other artists like to do with wet media.  Please feel free to join this group if you love water soluble art.

Another Door Opens

Doorway

My father always says "When one door closes, another door opens".  I've always loved that saying.

My little family and I have been enjoying a wonderful few months Down Under.  Australia is my home land and one of the most magical places on earth.  I have so enjoyed being close to my family, living by the beach, and reconnecting to the Aussie culture.  Leaving this country is not something I ever find easy.

Doorway

I have been living in the USA for almost ten years now.  Iowa, and indeed the mid-west has offered us a peaceful life, filled with hospitality, snow and adventure. Close to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital was the best place we could have been when I started having complications during the early stages of my pregnancy. As it turned out, and our son was born 16 weeks premature and was 5 months in the NICU there.  But after almost ten years, it's now time for a change.

Doorway

So, we've decided we're staying in Australia.  That's right, we're relocating here.  My husband arrived a couple of weeks ago and as a family we have been contemplating this decision for a long time.  But there is no doubt in our minds now that Australia is the place we want to call home.  We put our house in Iowa on the market and it sold in just one week, so everything is aligning in our favor.

Over the next few months we'll be looking around this big beautiful country for the right place to settle.  Right now we are staying with family on the Beautiful Bellerine Peninsula in Victoria.  Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be exploring different options for a permanent home.

Doorway

Travel to and from the grocery store for an Autistic child is hard enough, let alone bringing Thomas half way around the world to another country.  This means I won't be returning to the US for quite some time.  Despite this, Thomas has settled well, he's loving the lifestyle and has just exploded in so many areas, but his continued success and development depend on a peaceful routine and ongoing security, so that is our priority.

Doorway

We've started Megan in school here and she's loving it.  She tells me she now speaks two languages, American and Australian.  She gets to wear a school uniform every day and she loves the fact that her school mascot is a dolphin...not to mention that when she looks out her class room window she can see the beach.  How good is that??

Doorway

And so starts the next major adventure in our lives.  The coming months will be a little challenging as I am without most of my art supplies and I don't have a studio space, but I'll be doing my best to share with you the illustrations of this journey and the joys of this adventure.

But I am making known my request - I want a spot in 21 Secrets! :-) Thanks for doing this!"

"Soooo hard to choose .. its a tie between Tracey Verdugo and Jane Davenport :) I've so enjoyed 21 Secrets this year, what a wonderful ride! I've shared this on my Facebook and Twitter pages (under the name Lulu Art) xx"

Happy Birthday Thomas

Tommy's Cupcake

Tomorrow is my dear little Tommy's 4th birthday.  Four years ago Thomas was born 16 weeks premature.  He was a 24 week micro-preemie and spent 5 months in the NICU.

Tommy's Cupcake

To say that life has been interesting since his untimely arrival would be an understatement. Predicatability, consistency, expectations...all have been thrown out the window.  But joy, excitement, and love have come to us in greater quantities that one could imagine.

Tommy's Cupcake

A few months ago Thomas was diagnosed Autistic.  It was not unexpected, but a shock nonetheless.  His world is not like ours, his path is not traveled in the same way as us. He is unique, he is brilliant, and he is beautiful.

Having him in our lives has given us the opportunity to grow beyond measure.

Tommy's Cupcake
Our little family of four is complete, and we are so very grateful.  He has shown us such wisdom, he has taught us compassion, and given us so much joy.

Tommy's Cupcake

Happy Birthday sweet Thomas.  I love you beyond measure. xx

Courage

Courage

I, like many in our little art community, have been rocked by the recent breast cancer diagnosis our dear friend Tracey Fletcher King received some weeks ago.   I have been honored by my friendship with Tracey over the years, and inspired by her wit, humor, beauty, and creativity.

Courage

Tracey is currently at war with this terrible disease, and so much of my heart is at war with her.  I think about her every day and I send all my strength to her and her family.

Courage

Tracey is a strong, powerful, brave woman and I know she will come through the next few months having shed lots of layers, cried many tears, and in awe of her own strength and grace.  She has insurmountable courage, as do so many women who have gone down this path before her.

Courage

But in reality this battle is something that has been forced upon her. It is not her willingness to go into battle against cancer than is inspiring, in this she has no choice.  It is her courage to face this monster with grace, dignity, and humour.  It is her honesty and control in the face of such debilitating fear that I honor.  It is her loving and caring heart that remains unchanged, her intellect, her elegance, and her commitment to her family that are truly amazing.

Courage

Tracey Fletcher King is a hero, and I honor her.

Courage

Please keep Tracey and her family in your thoughts.
