The Art of Motherhood

I was interviewed for Featuring Magazine last year and that interview The Art of Motherhood, appears in the latest issue which is available now. The article is about me and two amazing, inspiring artists who are also mothers; Minnemie Murphy and Bethany Kartchner.

Marcia Beckett from Featuring wanted to know some of the challenges, joys, and experiences of juggling both motherhood and artistic pursuits.  I imagine that there are also many of you who have your own experience of this conundrum. When I was pondering Marcia's questions it bought back so many memories of my struggles to bring into balance both of these elements of myself.  I'm not sure that I've actually achieved that balance yet, it's a work in progress.

Art and creativity is an unabated passion, and deeply ingrained instinct that exists within so many of us.  Over the years I have heard thousands of stories from people like myself who have waged a war against expectations, criticism, lack of confidence, and most of all time in their unquenchable need to create.  I know I have.  It's a constant struggle of morphing priorities, unexpected roadblocks, and crippling self-doubt.  But sprinkled in there are those moments of creative flow, peace, and precious solitude that keep driving us forward as artists.

Marcia's article about The Art of Motherhood gives us some interesting insights into the processes and challenges of raising a family and being artist and some great tips on how to make it work for you.  My take on it is that the paradigm is different for everyone.  No two situations are the same and the passion and pursuit is as individual as the art created.  That's what I love about it.
